Performing Arts Center

Urban street scene with a few people walking on a sidewalk, parked vehicles, green trees, and city buildings under a bright sun.

This portion of the Wichita Forward proposal sets aside funding for a potential new downtown performing arts center, designed to complement- not replace- Wichita’s existing arts organizations and venues.

Any performing arts facility would move forward only if it meets clearly defined financial, community, and oversight requirements.

Funding

Up to $75 million in public funding is included in the ballot framework for a performing arts center. Public funds would not be released unless private fundraising thresholds are met, ensuring shared responsibility and broad financial support.

Why it matters

Wichita and its professional performance organizations contribute to quality of life, economic impact and opportunities for all generations to experience Broadway musicals, symphony performances, the arts and creativity. A modern, right-sized performing arts venue could:

  • Support Wichita’s cultural economy and visitor activity
  • Attract touring performances, shows and productions
  • Expand opportunities for residents of all ages to experience the arts locally

At the same time, Wichita Forward recognizes that public investment in the arts must be financially responsible. Any public contribution must be paired with private investment, strong oversight, and a clear plan for long-term sustainability.

Key facts

  • Public funding is contingent on private fundraising commitments, ensuring broad financial support.
  • All design and location decisions will be subject to public input, independent oversight and formal City Council review.
  • The performing arts center is intended to enhance- not replace- the diverse arts venues that already make Wichita’s cultural scene unique.
