Urgency

Wichita stands at a crossroads.
Our community’s needs are immediate—rising homelessness, aging public safety facilities, loss of dollars without modern convention and performing arts spaces as well as unsustainable property tax levels. Delaying action increases costs and limits our ability to respond effectively.
Federal ARPA funds that currently support homelessness services are scheduled to expire in September 2026. Without a sustainable funding plan in place, Wichita risks losing critical programs and leaving vulnerable residents without support.
At the same time, infrastructure needs across the city continue to grow. If these needs are not addressed proactively, the City’s options narrow to raising property taxes or reducing essential services. Property tax increases affect homeowners directly and are often passed along to renters through higher housing costs.
Delays also come with financial consequences. Postponing investments in public safety facilities can increase costs through future borrowing, while deferred maintenance at Century II risks higher repair expenses and missed opportunities to attract visitors and events that support the local economy.
The Wichita Forward plan offers a responsible path forward.
By acting now through a time-limited sales tax, Wichita can:
- Stabilize homelessness funding before current dollars expire
- Invest in police and fire facilities more efficiently
- Modernize convention and performing arts facilities
- Preserve Century II as a community asset
- Reduce long-term pressure on property taxes
Action now helps protect purchasing power as construction and maintenance costs continue to rise.
This initiative is citizen-led, guided by independent oversight, and designed with clear guardrails to ensure accountability. Addressing these challenges now allows Wichita to plan thoughtfully, rather than react later under greater financial strain.
